The HSUS sponsored SB 5651 (companion bill HB1936), passed out of the State Legislature last week and is on its way to the Governor for her signature. There still may be time to contact Governor Christine Gregoire and request she NOT sign the bill into law. Never hurts to try.
I’m quite sure that as far as HSUS and PETA are concerned they have now “punched a hole in the dam.” This bill is but a precursor to other attempts to curtail purebred dog breeding and the ultimate goal stated for both organizations, “elimination all pet animal ownership and breeding” may soon be achieved.
I am amazed that so very many pet owners are unaware of those goals and support those organizations with money and time. Many seem to think that only the “BAD” guys and not their own beloved pets will be affected by their legislative attacks. Somehow we need to get the word out to ALL pet owners. One avenue may be the new AKC mixed breed program. Perhaps allowing all and sundry into the AKC fold will help communication. It’s a start.
Meanwhile on the local front, King County has now raised the licensing fee on intact animals to $90,00 per dog!!! For those who have a Hobby Kennel License and several intact dogs the total fees will be large and punitive.
Do we see a trend here? I don’t want to appear to be harping on the subject of governmental control and interference and the influence and money the anti-pet organizations put into their state-by-state successes, but it’s real, it’s here and it’s now…and so are we. We’ve got to organize and work together will ALL segments of the pet world be it pet shops, commercial breeders, cat owners, horse owners, vets etc…… How, when do we begin?
